The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed that government appointees will not be able to run in the party’s next executive elections if they do not resign from their positions.
Jibril Mahdi, the party’s acting IT director, stated that the NDC’s policy requiring appointees to resign from government before applying for party positions is still in effect and cautioned that anyone who is still employed by the government is not eligible to run for office.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Mr. Mahdi stated on Citi News Digest that “whoever is in office is not qualified to contest our elections.”
The statement was made as the NDC gets ready to choose executives for important roles. The party leadership has instructed government appointees who want to run to step down before submitting their nominations.
Mr. Mahdi explained that officials would only get official confirmation during the filing and vetting procedure and that the party headquarters had not received resignation notices from the majority of people who were allegedly stepping down.
“Officially, we have not received any notice from anybody that has resigned. Whatever we are hearing is based on the social media information because, at party headquarters, we are not the appointing authority,” he stated.
However, he acknowledged that several people had quit, including Leland Tay, a candidate for national chairman, and the Eastern Region’s regional chairman and regional communication officer.
A number of government officials who could have been thinking about running for party executive positions while keeping their public postings could have their aspirations impacted by the NDC’s stance.
Additionally, Mr. Mahdi denied that the party had received any formal requests for special exemptions for anybody wishing to evade the resignation obligation.
