Contractors working on the government’s projected 24-Hour Economy market projects nationwide have been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to finish the projects before getting paid.
The president noted that certain contractors had previously failed to finish projects after receiving advance payments and stated that the decision is meant to increase accountability and prevent delays in project execution.
During his two-day working tour of the Central Region, President Mahama spoke at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy market in Assin Bereku in the Assin North District.
He reiterated that the 24-Hour Economy remains one of his main campaign promises and reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to fully implementing the policy.
He said that the initiative’s creation of contemporary markets will boost local companies, provide jobs, and promote economic expansion.
The president emphasised that before the government provides funding, contractors must show progress and finish the tasks they have been given.
According to him, the action was required since prior experience revealed that certain contractors misappropriated project funds for other uses, which led to projects being shelved or postponed.
President Mahama added that the government is still dedicated to putting the 24-Hour Economy strategy into practice in order to promote national development and enhance livelihoods, despite the economic difficulties that his administration inherited.
Ahunabobrim Nana Prah Agyensaim VI, the Paramount Chief of the Owirenkyi Traditional Area, praised President Mahama for launching the 24-Hour Economy initiative.
The Paramount Chief admitted that while some segments of the public may criticise the program, he thinks it has the potential to change Ghana’s economy and generate long-term job possibilities.
The success of the strategy rests on the support of all Ghanaians, he said, urging the president to stay focused and not be deterred by criticism.
The Paramount Chief urged people to embrace the 24-Hour Economy program in the same spirit of solidarity for the good of the nation, drawing a similarity with the nation’s support for Ghana’s Black Stars.
He applauded the strategy and said he was confident it will significantly advance Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
