Maphlix Farms, based in Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region, plans to sell 3,000 tonnes of tomatoes to the Ghanaian market, bolstering efforts to increase local production and improve food security.

Following Burkina Faso’s recent ban on tomato exports, which they have now lifted, this news comes at a crucial moment.

As part of the Ministry’s continuous collaboration with important private sector players to boost agricultural output and lessen reliance on imports, the development was disclosed during a working visit by Hon. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture.

The farm’s use of cutting-edge, technologically advanced methods, such as effective irrigation systems, nursery operations, and increased open-field agriculture, was praised by the Minister.

He stated that it is anticipated that these measures will greatly boost production and guarantee a steady supply of tomatoes.

Additionally, it was announced that harvesting has already started, with product being picked every three days. This development is anticipated to assist stabilise supplies and lower market prices.

Additionally, he emphasised continued cooperation with academic institutions to create better, climate-resilient seed kinds to raise the calibre and shelf life of tomatoes grown nearby.
