32 demonstrators from the Democracy Hub have sued the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and other parties, claiming they have been violated in their human rights.

A High Court order is being requested by the demonstrators, who are being represented by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Francis-Xavier Sosu, in order to uphold their fundamental rights, which include the freedom of expression, the right to protest, the right to personal liberty, and the freedom of movement.

The lawsuit also seeks defense against arbitrary and illegal detention, arrest, and malicious prosecution, as well as the right to counsel and the ability to post bond until the outcome of the case.

These demonstrators were among the 53 people detained during a nonviolent protest that happened between September 21 and September 23, which descended into violence following altercations with the police.

At Accra’s 37 Roundabout, the demonstrators were accused by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) of obstructing traffic, destroying property, tearing down barriers, and blocking roadways.

Nine of the 53 people detained are presently incarcerated, with the remaining individuals being held by the police.

The prosecution has refuted any allegations of abuse against the defendants, claiming that they received the appropriate care, including meals from the well-known restaurant Papaye.

The defense brought up the severe conditions the demonstrators were being held in at a bail hearing and asked to be released.

The prosecution objected to bail, claiming that the demonstrators’ addresses were unknown. As a result, the judge jailed the demonstrators until October 8 and denied them bail.

The remanded protestors showed their displeasure by chanting national songs after the court proceedings.
