The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reiterated its commitment to developing strategic global collaborations to promote equitable growth and sustainable urban development in the capital.

The Assembly stated that it would continue to engage towns and municipalities around the world in the formation of sister city partnerships.

As part of larger initiatives to position Accra as a city open to international cooperation and advancement, Mr. Bashiru Salifu, Head of International Relations at the AMA, affirmed the Assembly’s commitment and stated that such partnerships were meant to foster collaboration in important areas, such as trade, culture, innovation, governance, and knowledge exchange.

He said that the AMA is open to expressions of interest from cities and municipalities looking to establish official connections with Accra, emphasising the potential for institutional learning, economic cooperation, and the exchange of best practices in urban development and management.

Mr. Salifu clarified that the action was a component of its broader dedication to city diplomacy and initiatives to fortify ties that would significantly help to the expansion and development of the city.

Additionally, he recognised the vital role that other Greater Accra Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies play, characterising them as essential collaborators in local development and governance.

In order to increase collective international participation throughout the capital and make sure that the advantages of international collaborations were felt more widely at the local level, the Head of International Relations emphasised the importance of the leadership and initiative of the various sister assemblies.

He urged sister assemblies in Accra to seek advice and technical assistance from the AMA’s Office of International Relations in order to find, start, and formalise Sister City agreements with cities of their choosing.

Mr. Salifu reassured local assemblies that the AMA was prepared to offer the support they needed to successfully traverse the process of forming such alliances and establishing long-lasting connections with foreign counterparts.

He emphasised that the AMA was still dedicated to assisting cooperative initiatives that would boost institutional capacity and provide communities with shared advantages.

He gave his word that the Assembly was ready to collaborate with local government partners and international city authorities to create long-lasting alliances that may support development results in a variety of sectors.

He urged anyone who were interested in Sister City partnerships to get in touch with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) Office of International Relations.
