The Management of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has repaired and deployed 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses on major routes across Accra as part of efforts to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the capital.
The latest development has increased the number of operational Aayalolo buses in the Greater Accra Region to 128, providing commuters with more public transport options across key routes.
GAPTE Managing Director Awudu Dawuda disclosed the development when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, paid a working visit to the Madina Aayalolo terminal.
The visit was aimed at assessing the performance of the Aayalolo bus service and identifying practical measures to improve public transportation, enhance commuter mobility and make bus services across Accra more efficient.
According to Mr Dawuda, increasing the number of operational buses remains a major priority for GAPTE, particularly as the organisation seeks to tackle traffic congestion in Accra and improve transportation services within the Greater Accra Region.
He explained that GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently invested in repairing 48 additional vehicles. The repaired buses have now been added to the existing fleet and deployed across various Aayalolo routes.
Dawuda said the expansion of the operational fleet is expected to enhance mobility for residents while supporting efforts to provide a more reliable and efficient public transport system in Accra.
He noted that the organisation’s focus has been on increasing the number of buses available on its routes to help commuters move around the capital more conveniently.
“We inherited 80 operational buses, and our priority was to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra Region. We therefore repaired over 48 buses and added them to the 80 buses, bringing the number currently operating on our corridors to 128,” he explained.
The expansion of the Aayalolo bus fleet is expected to strengthen public transportation in Accra and provide additional support for commuters who rely on affordable bus services across the Greater Accra Region.
