Out of the 2,241 illegal immigrants detained on the streets of Accra begging, 925 have been returned, according to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The GIS nabbed the migrants on Friday, May 16, 2025, during a large-scale operation. The process of repatriation started on Saturday, May 17.
106 Nigerians and 819 Nigeriens have been returned to their countries of origin thus far, according to a statement released by the GIS on Monday, May 19.
“Repatriation was initiated in the morning of Saturday, 17th May, 2025. At the time of this release, 925 persons have been successfully repatriated, and processes are underway to remove the rest,” the statement said.
The GIS emphasized that more work is being done to get rid of the remaining unauthorized migrants that were gathered during the exercise.
AU-affected immigrants underwent security screening and profiling in accordance with SOPs, according to the GIS.
GIS guaranteed that the service has met the necessities of those in detention, including meals, and that a clinic is available to offer medical care when needed.
“Immigrants were also segregated based on their gender and age, in line with international best practices,” the statement added.
