The by-election for Assin North has been scheduled for June 27, 2023 by the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC).
This comes after the Supreme Court ruled that James Gyakye Quayson’s election as the representative for Assin North was invalid and illegal.
James Quayson’s election while he had allegiance to a nation other than Ghana, according to the seven-member panel chaired by Justice Jones Dotse, is “inconsistent with and violates Article 94(2) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana 1992.”
The court directs Parliament to remove his identity as a member of Parliament from its files.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was subsequently informed by the Parliament through the Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, of the existence of a vacancy in the Assin North Constituency.
The date for the Assin North by-election was announced by the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Adukwei Mensa, in a release dated May 31, 2023.
She stated that from Monday, June 12, 2023, to Wednesday, June 14, 2023, between the hours of 9:00am to 2:00pm to 5:00pm on each day, nominations will be accepted at the Assin North District Office of the Commission.
Each candidate must pay a filing fee of 10,000 Ghana cedis (GHC10,000.00).
