The National Communications Authority (NCA) has issued a directive that states that all active and unregistered SIM cards must be disabled and removed starting today, May 31.
The present SIM Registration exercise, which started on October 1, 2021, will terminate on May 31, 2023, NCA Director General Joe Anokye revealed last month.
Around 11 million active but unregistered SIM cards would be removed from networks after May 31, 2023, claims Mr. Anokye.
Subscribers who were exempt from the present exercise are among the 11 million SIMs. These people include ambassadors, refugees, and Ghanaians traveling on business. The rest of the group consists of subscribers who have registered some of their SIMs, Ghana Card holders who have declined to register, and individuals without Ghana Cards.
In order to increase trust and confidence in the use of telecommunications, financial, and other essential services, according to Mr. Anokye, a reliable SIM register was required. This would aid security and law enforcement efforts, safeguard Ghana’s public peace, and advance socioeconomic development. He thus asked all parties, including the media, to assist the success of the exercise.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, announced the start of the re-registration of all mobile SIM cards on October 1, 2021. The program was supposed to last for six months, but it was repeatedly prolonged due to real difficulties faced by SIM card users.
