Akoto Nelson, 32, was taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service’s National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit for impersonating a police officer at Shatta Wale’s performance in Accra’s Black Star Square.
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, the suspect was taken into custody by a group of police officers who had been sent to guard a musical performance.
The squad saw the suspect acting strangely while wearing a police uniform and holding the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He acknowledged during questioning that he was not a police officer.
The suspect claimed he lacked the funds to pay the admission charge, so he pretended to be a police officer to obtain free admission to the event, according to the results of the investigation.
Additionally, he said that the police accoutrements were acquired in 2022 from a deceased Chief Inspector named Gyasi, whose uniform was in question.
A later search at his Taifa-Ashaiman home turned up a number of objects that were kept as exhibits.
Among them are a toy P99 handgun, a pepper spray, two ZTE mini handsets, a pepper spray bag, a ZTE charger, a Xinfa cutting knife, several free cards, a voter ID with Akoto Nelson Elikem’s name, and a birth certificate bearing Nelson Akoto’s name.
Additionally, preliminary enquiries revealed that the suspect is employed by a private organisation as a messenger and security guard. He will appear in court and is still being held by the police.
