MTN Group Ltd. and Telecel Group are prepared to bid for 5G licenses in Ghana after the government terminated the exclusive rights of a state-backed wholesale provider that had teamed with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s company.
MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett and Telecel Group CEO Moh Damush told Bloomberg that the African telecom providers want to submit bids in a 5G licence auction that is anticipated to start in a few weeks.
The auction comes after the government decided to cancel Next Gen Infraco’s exclusive concession before it expires in 2034. The network infrastructure would be supplied by Radisys Corp., a division of Reliance Industries Ltd., which Ambani controls.
