A technical group to study the Computerised School Placement System (CSSPS) has been announced by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu in response to mounting public discontent with the system’s efficiency and fairness.

The Minister stated that the review will examine the placement process in detail and offer believable changes within 30 days while visiting Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC-Legon) in Accra to greet recently admitted first-year pupils.

“Repeated complaints from parents and students who feel the system has failed to place candidates according to their choices and merits” he said had an impact on the decision.

“I have observed that some parents are unhappy, justified. Some students are unhappy, justified, because they chose a particular course and were given something else. That will be a disincentive even for that child,” he said.

“It means that the computerized placement system is not working well for the country, and I’m happy to review it. I’ll put in place a committee to review its performance over 30 days and give me a credible alternative. What we need is meritorious admission.”

He further emphasised that no student should be turned away because of systemic flaws or protocol influences, calling such situations “unfair.”

In order to guarantee that the placement process reflects openness, merit, and equity, the Minister further stated that important stakeholders, such as school administrators and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), will be involved in the next evaluation.

During the tour, Mr. Iddrisu also evaluated the state of the school’s infrastructure, pointing out that the labs, dorms, and classrooms are still insufficient and dilapidated.

He declared that the government would start a program to raise 10 category C schools to category B status and 10 category B schools to category A status by 2026.

He alluded to a unique intervention package that would enhance the facilities for accommodations, labs, and infrastructure in ten chosen schools.
