This year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which is set to take place from Monday, May 4 to Monday, May 11, 2026, is anticipated to draw 619,985 applicants.
According to a breakdown provided by Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), there are 304,273 male candidates and 315,712 female candidates.
Eleven courses will be taught at 2,302 locations nationwide by the applicants, who were selected from 20,784 schools.
Mr. Kapi emphasized that candidates must arrive at the exam halls on time and stated that the rules governing the test have not changed.
“No candidate should go to the examination hall late,” he said.
“They should not carry any foreign material on them,” he emphasised.
Additionally, Mr. Kapi advised educators who were not officially involved in the examination process to avoid the centers.
He issued a warning: “No teacher should attempt to offer assistance to any candidate at the examination centres. Any teacher who falls foul of the law will be dealt with.”
The Upper West Region has submitted 14,928 students from 628 schools to take the test at 51 locations, according to WAEC statistics.
114,243 applicants from 3,295 schools in the Greater Accra Region will take the test at 443 locations.
In contrast to the Central Region, which has 69,496 candidates from 2,531 schools writing at 247 centers, the Eastern Region has registered 56,700 candidates from 2,222 schools to sit at 211 centers.
45,457 candidates from 1,408 schools were registered in the Western Region; they will be seated in 154 centers.
With 124,905 candidates from 3,383 schools writing at 444 centers, the Ashanti Region has the most.
While the Volta Region has 30,055 students from 1,200 schools writing at 118 centers, the Bono Region has submitted 24,984 candidates from 831 schools to write at 88 centers.
37,308 applicants from 823 schools are taking the test at 132 locations in the Northern Region.
22,449 candidates from 768 schools are writing at 94 centers in the Upper East Region.
In contrast to the Bono East Region, which has 20,897 candidates from 742 schools writing at 80 centers, the Ahafo Region has enrolled 12,578 candidates from 465 schools to sit at 50 centers.
There are 10,033 candidates from 268 schools writing at 34 centers in the North East Region and 12,401 candidates from 496 schools sitting at 47 centers in the Oti Region.
6,989 applicants from 250 schools were given the opportunity to write at 26 locations in the Savannah Region.
17,372 candidates from 687 schools are writing at 83 centers in the Western North Region.
Final-year junior high school students in Ghana can advance to senior high schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions thanks to the BECE.
Continuous Assessment accounts for 30% of the final outcomes, while external examination accounts for the remaining 70%.
