The Ministry of Transportation has been directed by President John Dramani Mahama to assist in the extension of the railway line from Tema Port to the Dawa Industrial Enclave in the Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the Tema Port – Dawa Industrial Enclave Railway line project should be carried out and put into service while the Mpakadan Inland Port on the Volta Lake is being completed. This will make it easier to move cargo from the Port to the Dawa Industrial Enclave.

According to him, the corridor will make it easier to move workers from the Ashaiman enclave to the Industrial Enclave once it is finished.

The President issued the order to settle the salary arrears of rail sector workers during a meeting with organised labour, which was chaired by TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah.

President Mahama stated that in order to make provisions to settle the arrears, the Finance Minister will be evaluated over the salary issue.

Additionally, he said that more than a hundred railway employees from the Western Region will be moved to Tema to oversee the Tema-Mpakadan line in accordance with the transport minister’s suggestions, and those who are retiring will receive fair compensation.

The President spoke about the destruction of outdated railway tracts and instructed the transport minister to make sure that railway workers carried out the job. In addition, he gave the order to ship the metals straight to facilities for recycling.

The TUC Secretary General expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his fast and proactive handling of matters impacting organised labour.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, President’s Special Aide and Presidential Advisor, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transportation, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and Dr. Frederick Appoh, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, were all present at the meeting.
