The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) won’t be cancelled, according to Dr. Eric Nkansah, director general of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Please don’t mention that we aren’t writing BECE anymore. Not cancelled is BECE. Even students in Junior High School Two would write in addition to us.

The director general addressed the following rumors that the BECE might be scrapped or cancelled. Therefore, junior high school students in their last year would not write the BECE.

Dr. Nkansah was participating in conversations on the forum regarding the present BECE grading system.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) organized the forum, which was titled “The Fundamentals of the BECE Grading System.”

The Ghana National Association of Teachers, the Ghana National Association of Private Schools, GES, and the Ministry of Education were among the organizations represented.

It aimed to clarify how the existing BECE grading systems compared to student performances. The service would address all issues related to the BECE grading system, Dr. Nkansah assured the audience.

Ghana has reportedly adopted the Standard Nine (Stanine) grading system for exams, according to Felix Akuffo-Badoo, a former head of the Test Administration Division of WAEC.

Several education review panels, according to Akuffo-Badoo, have also provided recommendations to resolve concerns highlighted with the use of the Continuous Assessment Scores and the Grading system.

He claimed that for hiring and promoting employees, the council had employed the Stanine System. He claimed that in the early stages of the school reforms, the system was determined to be the best that could be used for certification and selection.

He pointed out that under the Stanine Grading system, grades were properly distributed and candidate standards had remained constant throughout time.

He claimed that because there was no human interference and some calculations had no financial ramifications, the system made them simple to perform.

“It was good for selection from a group of large applicants and it also gave a quick understanding of where a test score lies.”
