According to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, agriculture is a key component of the economy and must be scaled up to contemporary, commercial levels to provide food security for Ghanaians. This requires steady, dependable power.
When he met a delegation from the National Service Scheme (NSS) board, he said these things.
The courtesy call was in response to the Sekyere Kumawu Economic Enclave Project that the NSS is leading in the Ashanti Region and its energy requirements.
Large-scale maize and soybean farming, as well as related operations like agro-processing and training of national service people in the agriculture value-chain, are all included in the agro-industrial project.
The Minister praised the project, saying, “This is a very commendable initiative and I am confident that this youth-focused program fits into the President’s vision for our economy as captured under the Planting for Food and Jobs program.”
This will give our agricultural products more value, he continued.
Dr. Prempeh said, “Ghana is blessed with arable land and a favorable environment, and my ministry stands ready to support the project’s power needs in order to make it more viable and to serve as a model to be duplicated in other parts of the country.
