Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has been expelled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to what the party claims were derogatory comments made about its internal structures and leadership.

The NPP called Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s actions and public remarks “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party” in a statement signed by the party’s general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

The decision comes after the well-known cardiac surgeon gave an interview on Monday, January 12, 2026, on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, in which he delivered a scathing indictment of the party he had previously served.

The NPP claims that Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s remarks compromise party unity and go against the party’s constitution, which calls for the start of disciplinary procedures that may result in his expulsion.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng publicly questioned the legitimacy of the present NPP during the interview, claiming that it no longer embodies the ideals and tenets upon which it was established. He separated himself from the current leadership and course of the party, calling it “fake.”

“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,””  he remarked, noting that the “real” party only existed in the background.

The party’s internal democratic procedures, specifically the election of its most recent presidential candidate, also caused the former minister to voice grave concerns.

He alleged that bribery, intimidation, and manipulation of delegates polluted the process and warned that such actions signal the start of institutionalised corruption.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng further connected these purported anomalies to the party’s dismal showing in the most recent national elections, contending that the NPP has neglected to thoroughly investigate the causes of its failure.

He warned that it would be a “trainwreck” to reelect former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer without resolving those fundamental problems.

He clarified that his criticism was not personal, saying that while Dr. Bawumia is “a very nice person,” his personality is not enough to guide Ghana during a crucial period.

How soon the disciplinary procedure will start and whether Prof. Frimpong-Boateng will formally address the party’s decision are still unknown.
