Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, has emphasised that there should be no ambiguity in the concepts of male and female, or gender, in any educational book.

He stated that the Ministry solely acknowledges biological definitions of these terms, which must be represented in all educational publications, curricula, and communications.

“Every publication, curriculum, and communication from the Ministry must reflect the biological definitions of these terms,” he made clear.

His remarks came in the aftermath of controversy over purported LGBTQ-related topics being included in the country’s Senior High School curriculum.

Speaking on the fringes of a Tamale event on Thursday, Mr. Iddrisu maintained that the assertions were “false and misleading.”

He clarified that the error, which happened in a widely shared paper created in 2024, does not represent the Ministry’s stance.

However, he stated that the Year Two Teacher Education Curriculum has been urgently revised by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

“NaCCA will ensure that all educational materials are clear, accurate, and standardised across all schools in the country. Our stance on using biological definitions is meant to eliminate confusion, promote uniformity, and ensure that all teaching and learning content aligns with national standards,” he continued.

The Minister spoke at the start of the Ghana Education Service’s two-day National Master Training on Essential Values for Ghanaians.

The goal of the program is to give facilitators the tools they need to help school-level teams implement Value Learning Communities (VLCs) and the new Guidance and Counselling framework.

Selected guidance and counselling coordinators from across the nation came together for the event.

According to Mr. Iddrisu, the training would assist facilitators in instilling in pupils discipline, fundamental values, and good behavior—all of which are crucial for creating a positive learning environment.

“Discipline in schools is the foundation for academic excellence and moral development,” he continued. “Through these trainings, we aim to empower educators to guide students not just academically, but also in character and ethics.”

He emphasised the Ministry’s efforts to maintain national educational standards and guarantee uniformity in discipline and value-based learning throughout all schools.
