The Proper Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 (Anti-gay Bill) has received a plea for expedited consideration from Samuel Nartey George, member of parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram.
He encouraged the Parliament’s Business Committee to take the Bill up for discussion the following week.
Sam George made the demand on Friday, June 16, as Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin delivered the Business Statement for the coming week.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Values Bill, he argued, ought to be brought up for the house’s agenda. We can start delaying it pending the completion of another major task. We would appreciate it if they could table it starting next week.
The Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee presented its report on the anti-gay measure to the house on March 30, 2023.
The legislation aims to make LGBT behaviors illegal and to protect and support LGBT victims, including minors.
The house would have to consult with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on the proper course of action, according to First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu, because legal actions had been brought against the measure.
