Frederick Kumi, also known as Abu Trica, is a social media influencer from Ghana who appeared before a US court and rejected all charges.

His trial is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026, according to the court.

Kumi said he was innocent of the charges against him and entered a not guilty plea. In the meanwhile, his legal team is expected to prepare for the trial. Both the prosecution and the defence will gather evidence and present their own arguments.

The Ghanaian national was extradited to the United States to face charges for allegedly taking part in a romantic scam that defrauded elderly Americans of more than $8 million, according to the prosecution.

He has dismissed the accusations and denied any role in the alleged conduct.

According to US prosecutors, Abu Trica and others used artificial intelligence techniques to fabricate internet aliases.

They allegedly used dating websites and social media channels to target victims. The prosecution also argues that the organization developed connections with victims, won their trust, and then used fraudulent accusations to get money.

According to the prosecution, the purported demands for money were connected to made-up circumstances such as investment opportunities, urgent medical needs, and travel expenses.

On Thursday, July 9, 23026, Abu Trica was taken to the US to answer to the allegations. He may spend up to 20 years in jail if found guilty of conspiring to commit money laundering and wire fraud.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, is hearing the case. The jury trial is set for September 8, 2026, according to Judge John R. Adams. A pre-trial meeting has also been scheduled for August 25, 2026.

Both parties may pursue plea discussions if they so wish, according to court documents, but any deal must be made prior to the pre-trial date. Plea deals will not be accepted after that, the court declared.

It stated, “Accordingly, the court will not accept plea agreements after the date of the pre-trial.”

Abu Trica had over 100,000 Instagram followers and was well-known for posting lifestyle-related posts prior to his arrest.

Prosecutors said that his posts, which regularly included opulent items, drew attention and prompted enquiries about his sources of wealth.

According to US authorities, potential victims were identified and contacted using social media and online dating services.

Before payment requests were made, the alleged plan entailed extended, intimate talks intended to build confidence.

Investigators assert that third individuals serving as middlemen facilitated the transfer of cash and goods taken from victims.

The assets were then divided among purported associates in Ghana and the United States.

In a joint operation combining Ghanaian and US authorities, Kumi, a resident of Swedru in southern Ghana, was taken into custody last year.

The arrest was a component of larger investigations by law authorities to look into foreign networks that are said to be involved in internet fraud schemes that target vulnerable people.

Kumi’s age is another point of contention.

US prosecutors have identified him as 31 years old, while his lawyer claims he is 28.

Recently, US authorities have stepped up their efforts to combat fraud networks operating in West Africa and the US, especially those allegedly exploiting internet platforms to deceive and financially exploit elderly victims.

Kumi is still believed innocent, until proven guilty in court.
