The Government of Ghana has declined a proposed GHS20 million donation from MTN Ghana intended to support Ghanaians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it became aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing the financial contribution to assist Ghanaian victims of the attacks.
According to the Ministry, the reports appeared to have followed comments made by MTN Board Chairman Dr Ishmael Yamson during an interview.
Although the government expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for the gesture, it said the offer would not be accepted because the Mahama administration has already made adequate financial arrangements to support the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the government’s position had already been communicated to MTN’s Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer during a meeting with the Minister on August 14, 2026.
The government said it remains committed to ensuring the safe evacuation of Ghanaians affected by the xenophobic attacks and providing financial assistance for their reintegration after they return to Ghana.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also pledged to publish a comprehensive breakdown of the total cost of the evacuation exercise after its completion.
The disclosure, according to the Ministry, is intended to promote transparency, accountability and public confidence in the government’s handling of the humanitarian operation.
Meanwhile, the government reiterated its commitment to maintaining a favourable business environment in Ghana for international companies and brands operating in the country, irrespective of their country of origin.
The Ministry stressed that the welfare and safety of Ghanaian citizens remain a top priority as authorities continue efforts to protect and support citizens affected by the incidents in South Africa.
