The wearing of visible name tags by all on-duty health personnel is mandatory, according to Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who also calls adequate identification a crucial first step in enhancing patient safety and accountability throughout the health sector.

After the baby snatching incident at the Mamprobi Polyclinic on February 17, he ordered strict adherence to Ghana Health Service procedures and demanded that baby-and-parent tagging systems be immediately reinforced. He also asked for closer cooperation with security authorities.

The public was reassured by the Minister that tangible steps are being taken to prevent a repeat, emphasising that the situation was unacceptable and avoidable.

The Hon. Akandoh evaluated the facilities, service provision, and workforce readiness at the Mamprobi Polyclinic, the College of Health Sciences, the Nursing and Midwifery College, and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as part of his working tour.

He met with the mother of the recovered infant at Korle Bu to show support and reiterate the Ministry’s dedication to justice and enhanced security measures.

Noting that improved infrastructure and tightened security measures are still essential to continuous improvements, the Minister also praised requests for the extension of labour, postnatal, and recovery wards made by local MP Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.

Hon. Akandoh emphasised the significance of human resource development in addition to infrastructure upgrades. In order to address shortages in specialist care, he laid forth plans to quickly assign recently graduated medical professionals to facilities with severe staffing shortages and to transform a few nursing schools into post-basic speciality schools.

The Minister’s actions demonstrate a strong and proactive dedication to creating a healthcare system that is safer, more effective, and more resilient for all Ghanaians.
