The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has officially opened a reconstructed and significantly expanded Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s National Cardiothoracic Centre, restoring one of the country’s most critical lifesaving facilities just a year after it was destroyed by fire.

The reopening of a medical facility is only one aspect of the inauguration. For thousands of Ghanaians suffering from cardiovascular illnesses, it symbolises the return of hope and reaffirms the nation’s resolve to improve its specialised healthcare system in spite of hardship.

Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, spoke at the inauguration ceremony and called it a turning point in Ghana’s healthcare history.

“Every nation, in its journey, will face a moment that tests not its resources, but its resolve. Today, Ghana answers that test, to restore a lifeline, reclaim a critical pillar of our national health security, and affirm that we do not abandon what saves lives,” she said

President John Dramani Mahama commissioned the first Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory in January 2017, and for eight years it provided cardiac care in Ghana by permitting complicated cardiac procedures that previously required patients to fly elsewhere.

However, on March 7, 2025, a terrible fire destroyed the facility, significantly affecting emergency cardiac interventions at the nation’s top referral hospital, putting an abrupt stop to that development.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund intervened, determined to undo the setback. The Trust Fund decided to reconstruct the laboratory and develop a more sophisticated and expansive facility capable of addressing Ghana’s rising cardiovascular disease burden after an evaluation visit in January 2026.

Less than five months after reconstruction started on February 17, 2026, the state-of-the-art laboratory is now prepared to serve the country.

The Administrator states that the new Cath Lab is “not a replica of what was lost,” but rather “a superior successor”; it has been completely rebuilt, enhanced technologically, greatly increased in capacity, and is intended to provide quicker, safer, and more sophisticated cardiac care.

It is anticipated that the new facility would have an immediate impact. The laboratory will host a historic cardiac intervention program in partnership with the National Cardiothoracic Center, American specialist cardiologists, the Mount Carmel Foundation, Africa World Airlines, and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund even before it formally resumes full operations.

She emphasised that the facility’s importance extends beyond its physical components.

Thirty patients chosen from all throughout Ghana will undergo intricate Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device surgeries starting on July 12, providing life-saving care that many would otherwise find difficult to obtain.

“This Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory is where expertise meets equity, where science meets compassion, and where families can receive life-saving care with dignity,” she stated.
