Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has shared her opinions on marriage, saying that she thinks it should be motivated by a desire for progress rather than just feelings.
In a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the multiple Grammy winner expressed her belief that marriage may experience difficult moments and that individuals should approach it with the knowledge that it won’t always be easy.
Tems clarified that she preferred a God-fearing partner because, in her opinion, such a person will be accountable, given the uncertain nature of marriage.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?”
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
