Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, observed a beach cleanup effort at Chorkor on Tuesday with the goals of enhancing environmental sanitation, safeguarding public health, and repairing the city’s shoreline.
In partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mayekoo, an Accra-based social impact crowdfunding platform, is working on a project that is anticipated to help clear the beach of accumulated trash, enhance the area’s hygienic conditions, and support larger initiatives to restore and preserve the coastline.
During the inspection, the Mayor stated that the exercise was in line with his administration’s commitment to taking concrete steps for beach restoration and sanitation. He also mentioned that the Assembly was interested in seeing the Chorkor beach restored as part of a long-term plan to unlock Accra’s coastline’s economic potential.

He claims that future tourism-related investments, such as hotel construction, might be supported by cleaner and better-managed beaches, which would also help the local economy and create jobs for young people.
Despite the numerous conflicting duties of his office, he stated that beach cleanup remained one of his top priorities and reassured the AMAs that they would be ready to assist with the city’s cleanup efforts.
The Assembly was prepared to provide the Mayekoo team the support they needed to make their intervention visible and successful, the Mayor promised them.
Hon. Theophilus Isaac Quaye, Chairman of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro and Assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area, emphasised the necessity of establishing a suitable access route from the roadside to the beach.
Mayekoo’s Programs Lead, Mr. Robert Mills Lamptey, stated that after first visiting Chorkor to evaluate the beach’s condition, the organization planned to extend its operations there.

According to the Mayekoo lead, the current intervention included a large-scale mechanical beach cleanup on Saturday, April 25, followed by an activity led by volunteers.
He stated that a number of corporate organisations, including Gripe, Clifton Homes, and Prudential Life Insurance, would participate in the volunteer component, which is set for Saturday.
In addition to the immediate cleanup, he said that the organization will take over the Chorkor beach for a year, returning at least twice a month to perform maintenance exercises with its tractor, plough, and self-rig equipment.
