The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a provision of the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill that would have given the Minister of the Interior the authority to grant licenses for the cultivation of cannabis for both industrial and medical purposes has alarmed Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin.

Bagbin emphasized that because of the court’s decision, Ghana is losing out on millions of dollars from the legal cultivation of cannabis.

In a meeting with the Supreme Court justices, he voiced his displeasure and encouraged them to get proper briefings from Parliament before making such decisions.

The three branches of government must work together and respect one another, according to Bagbin, who also argued that the judiciary shouldn’t make significant decisions without contacting Parliament.

He urged greater collaboration and said the nation should look into alternative revenue-generating options, like legalizing and regulating the cannabis sector. Bagbin gave the committee one week to submit their report.
