The New Patriotic Party (NPP) must select its future national leaders on the basis of competency rather than ethnicity, according to Mr. Awentami Paul Afoko, a National Chairman candidate.
The statements were made by Mr. Afoko at consultations held in Kumasi a few weeks ago with the Ashanti Regional Executives and the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders.
His nationwide outreach to party stakeholders and efforts to promote unity in advance of the NPP’s National Delegates Conference include these engagements.
Speaking to each group separately, Mr. Afoko voiced worry about the NPP’s current situation but advised against focusing on the 2024 election loss in the midst of the blame game.
He pleaded, “We need to gather collective experiences.”
“I would want to be remembered for rebuilding the party,” he said, emphasising that his goal is to assist in the party’s reconstruction.
“We must all put our hands on deck. We cannot sit and watch the party slide backwards.”
The party’s electoral success depends on the grassroots, Mr. Afoko addressed the Regional Council of Elders and Regional Executives.
“The heartbeat of the NPP is the Ashanti Region, and that remains a fact. I am open to advice because you are the ones running the party,” he added.
He called for unity, stating that in order to save its fortunes, the NPP must pool its experiences and not cede power to the NDC.
Before the general elections in 2028, speakers at both gatherings urged Mr. Afoko to stay dedicated to developing the party and making it a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture is Mr. Afoko’s 3R Agenda, which he believes is essential to bringing the NPP back to power.
