The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced the Ghana Card a portal to public services, healthcare, finance, and telecommunications for Ghanaians, marking the organization’s twentieth year of operation.

The Minister said that the NIA had developed from a “conceptual initiative” in 2006 into a “resilient and sophisticated biometric identity ecosystem” that currently supports both national security and economic participation during his speech at the 20th Anniversary Launch in Accra on the theme “Reflecting on the Past, Securing the Future.”

“When we began this journey, the road was fraught with uncertainty, resources were limited, and expectations were high. Yet through determination and foresight, a solid foundation was laid. Today, the Ghana Card transcends its role as a mere identification document,’ he said.

He emphasised three future priorities: ensuring universal coverage so that no Ghanaian is left behind; protecting data security and system integrity; and continuing to innovate so that identity becomes a seamless and accessible public utility.

Hon. Muntaka encouraged employees and partners to maintain this momentum, strive for excellence, and daringly explore new frontiers in identity management throughout the sub-region while assuring the Authority of Government of its everlasting support.

The Minister said, “Building a national identity system is an ongoing journey that must evolve alongside our people, our economy, and our national aspirations.”

Speaking at the occasion as well, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the Executive Secretary of NIA, discussed the organization’s evolution from its founding to its current position as a crucial component of Ghana’s political and economic institutions, including the ongoing use of technology to promote improvements and enhance operations.

Mr. Deku underlined that the Ghana card is meant to serve as a useful identifying tool for all services, highlighting its function as an efficient and inclusive tool.

He appealed for a fresh commitment with vigour, honesty, and purpose and commended Ghanaians for their faith in NIA.
