The Republic of Ghana’s government is extremely concerned about the growing number of xenophobic attacks in South Africa that target Africans and are carried out by groups posing as anti-immigrant vigilantes.

These attacks have caused varying degrees of injuries, business closure and takeover, looting, and property loss.

The Mahama Administration has taken several actions, such as requesting the African Union, evacuating our citizens, calling the South African Acting High Commissioner to Accra, and formally protesting at the highest diplomatic level.

The Ghanaian government today recommends its citizens to be extremely cautious while making travel plans and to postpone non-essential trips to South Africa until further notice.

For consular services, Ghanaians living in the nation are advised to stay in regular contact with the Ghana High Commission.

In order to guarantee the safety of Ghanaian citizens, the Government of the Republic of Ghana would keep working with the appropriate authorities of the Republic of South Africa to enable their departure.

In the interim, the Government of the Republic of Ghana would like to urge the Government of the Republic of South Africa to take steps to uphold law and order in the spirit of true Pan-Africanism and African integration, as well as to provide sufficient security for specific African groups within its borders.

The Republic of Ghana’s government reaffirms its dedication to putting Ghanaians’ wellbeing both domestically and internationally first.
