The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has started processing crude oil again after completing its first significant turnaround maintenance in four years, according to President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the Sentuo Oil Refinery’s Phase II commissioning ceremony on Thursday, June 25, the President stated that the project is a component of continuous changes in Ghana’s petroleum downstream industry that are intended to increase local refining capacity and improve efficiency.

He states that the Petroleum Downstream Sector Reform Committee has finished its work and made proposals that are being put into practice to improve the sector’s operations.

The refinery is anticipated to receive a shipment of Ghanaian crude oil once full capacity is reached in July, according to President Mahama, who also revealed that preparations are in place to improve TOR’s operating effectiveness and refining capacity. He explained that via concerted efforts by important sector organisations, Ghana has maintained stability in the supply of petroleum products despite worldwide geopolitical concerns and volatility in energy markets.

The President stated that the National Petroleum Authority, industry players, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition have worked together to maintain strategic fuel stocks and a steady supply across the country.

“I’m pleased to report that the Tema oil refinery has completed its first major turnaround maintenance exercise in four years and has resumed Crude oil processing. Plans are also underway to enhance its operational efficiency and increase its refining capacity, and my understanding is that in July, when they have fully ramped up the capacity, they will also receive a parcel of Ghana’s own crude,” he reiterated.
