Nine persons lost their lives on Monday as a result of the catastrophic flooding in Accra and Tema, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, there are signs that the number may rise.

Alex King Nartey, a member of the Ghana National Fire Service’s Public Relations Department, stated in a televised interview with JoyNews that the Service has confirmed nine flood-related deaths thus far based on reports from officers stationed throughout the affected areas.

“So at this time now, the confirmable or confirmed figures that I have, the only case is in the case of about nine people,” he said.

Mr. Nartey clarified that the Fire Service could only comment on instances that had been formally confirmed by officials on the ground, even when allegations of other deaths had surfaced from other regions.

“I’m hearing there are other deaths in other places. As of now, from my men on the ground,” he stated.

The confirmation coincides with emergency response teams’ ongoing search and rescue efforts in towns devastated by flooding, where inhabitants are still stuck after floodwaters overtook sewers and invaded homes.
