President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to replace the old maternity block at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with a modern facility as part of the government’s efforts to improve maternal healthcare services.
The procurement process for the new maternity block is already in progress, the President stated during the commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Center on Thursday.
According to Mr Mahama, the current Gordon-Guggisberg maternity building is dangerous since it has outlived its function and no longer offers a secure setting for expectant mothers, infants and medical professionals.
He emphasised that the facility should no longer be used for maternal healthcare due to significant safety hazards and that it will be dismantled once construction on a successor building starts.
The President believes that improving healthcare delivery necessitates more than just financing medical care, pointing out that contemporary, secure, and well-equipped healthcare facilities are equally essential to providing high-quality healthcare.
Mr. Mahama further declared that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund’s purview has been expanded to include funding for the construction of health facilities, the purchase and upkeep of medical equipment, and the hiring and training of qualified staff.
He clarified that the decision was influenced by persistent issues with medical equipment upkeep, which have forced a number of institutions to depend on the government for costly machine replacements on a regular basis.
According to the President, the updated strategy aims to raise the standard of healthcare services nationwide while ensuring that investments in the health sector are appropriately maintained and long-term viable.
