The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) wishes to inform the general public, residents, traders, shop owners, transportation operators, market leaders, business associations, corporate organisations, educational institutions, public and private institutions, community groups and all stakeholders that the President’s Two-Day National Flood Aftermath Clean-up Exercise will take place in the Accra Metropolis on Friday, 10th and Saturday, 11th July, 2026.

The exercise, which will take place every day from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, is a part of a nationwide initiative to encourage people, organisations, businesses, and communities to clean up their surroundings, desilt drains, remove debris related to flooding, and support public health and flood prevention measures.

In order to guarantee full participation and the successful execution of the exercise, all stores, markets, stalls, tabletop businesses, commercial establishments, corporate organisations, hawking activities, and other non-essential businesses within the Accra Metropolis will be closed from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Institutions that offer emergency and necessary services, however, are not subject to the closure mandate.

The exercise will concentrate on evacuating trash and disaster waste piles, sweeping streets, brushing curbs, collecting trash from public areas and road medians, desilting drains, fumigating impacted areas, clearing flood-related debris, sand, weeds, and waste from major roads, streets, and highways, and cleaning public areas, markets, truck parks, recreational parks, and communal waste collection points.

Activities will consist of:

• Evacuation of refuse and post flood waste at all SIP sites in Ablekuma South, Agbogbloshie Lorry Park, Kaneshie Market and Pasico.

• Sweeping of streets and brushing of kerbs at the Circle Enclave, High Street, Ring Road and Guggisberg Avenue, refuse collection from public places and road medians will take place along Ring Road West, also known as Mortuary Road, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange Enclave.

• Desilting of drains will also be undertaken at the Agbogbloshie Market, London Market, Chorkor Chemuenaa and Asafoatse Nettey Road, fumigation of Agbogbloshie and Kaneshie Markets, Avenor Township, Neoplan Station and its environs.

The Assembly also wants to let the public know that the exercise will take place on Friday, July 10, 2026, and will involve the Assembly, private organisations, security services, educational institutions, waste management firms, and the general public.

All communities and residents, volunteer and community-based organisations, security services, the Assembly, trash management firms, and the general public will participate in the exercise on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Therefore, it is recommended that market leaders, business associations, transport unions, managers of corporate institutions, heads of commercial establishments, religious organisations, and community leaders mobilise their members, employees, and followers to actively participate in the exercise and ensure strict compliance with the closure directive.

The AMA also wants to warn that anybody who opens stores, engages in commerce, hinders sanitation workers, empties trash into drains, establishes unlawful disposal sites, or engages in any other activity that compromises the exercise will face legal repercussions.

The Assembly informs the public that participation in communal labour conducted by the Assembly is mandatory for all able-bodied residents of a community or electoral area under the AMA Sanitation, Cleaning and Communal Labour Bye-laws, 2017.
