The New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleges that Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of its communications team, was apprehended by Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officials with the assistance of the Ghana Immigration Service.

In a social media post on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the party’s general secretary, levelled the accusation.

The NPP claims that Mr. Aboagye was taken into custody following the arrest at the airport.

The precise justifications for the purported imprisonment are still unknown, and as of the time of writing, EOCO has not released an official comment on the subject.

In his statement, Mr. Kodua said that no charges had been brought against Mr. Aboagye, that his location had not been revealed, and that lawyers had been refused access to him.

The General Secretary said the action was politically motivated and described the incident as “intimidation” rather than law enforcement, pointing out that Mr Aboagye had just declared his candidature for the party’s National Communications Officer post.

“Dennis Miracles Aboagye is one of the loudest and most effective critics of this government. He has asked hard questions about galamsey. He has challenged this administration’s record.” Mr. Kodua posted.

The NPP has called for Mr. Aboagye’s immediate release.

According to the party’s statement, he should be taken before an appropriate court if there are grounds for prosecution. Citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, the party is also demanding that he be given free access to legal representation and his family.

Additionally, Mr. Kodua urged the administration to stop what he called a trend of “politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions” directed against members of opposition parties.
