The government has managed to eliminate limitations on the importing of tomatoes and the sale of eggs to Burkina Faso, in order to increase bilateral trade between the two nations.
This timely breakthrough was made as a result of an immediate engagement with Burkina Faso authorities headed by Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, and Hon. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture, on Friday, July 17.
The Ministries want to reassure the private sector in Ghana, especially the exporters of eggs and poultry and the importers of tomatoes, that the engagement has yielded tangible, positive results and that the government of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama is still fully committed to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian producers and traders.
Recall that in response to quality concerns in several exporting nations, Burkinabe authorities recently placed limitations on Ghanaian egg shipments, especially those from Dormaa.
The two sides also demanded the creation of a Joint Technical Committee to guarantee the smooth operation of bilateral trade between the two nations and to urgently address any potential future problems.
A bilateral trade agreement has also been agreed upon by both nations in order to expand market access for goods and services, lower trade obstacles, and strengthen trade connections.
Regarding Ghana’s involvement in this year’s International Arts & Crafts Trade Fair (SIAO) in Burkina Faso, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare told the Burkinabe authorities that Ghana would send a high-level team to exhibit Ghanaian goods and services to the globe.
The Burkina trade corridor is one of the fast-growing in the sub-region with Ghana’s exports to Burkina expanding rapidly from US$573M in 2024 to US$637M in 2025.
Alongside the Ghanaian delegation were technical officials from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry (MOTAI), HE Sem Kenneth Akibate, Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, the Head of Chancery and other Embassy officials, and representatives from the private sector, including Dr. Ernest Appiah, Managing Director of Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG), AMG’s Burkina Representative, and Sylvester Asante, Chairman of the Dormaa Egg Exporters Association.
In the interest of traders, producers, and consumers in both nations, both parties reiterated their shared commitment to making sure that trade between the two nations is not hindered. a signal supported by strong pledges.
