The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic road accident at Birimso Bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, which reportedly claimed the lives of at least 15 people in a devastating multi-vehicle collision.

In a statement, the caucus extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured in the crash a speedy and full recovery. The Minority also expressed solidarity with everyone affected by the heartbreaking accident.

According to the caucus, the fatal crash highlights the urgent need for the Government of Ghana to improve road safety and accelerate ongoing infrastructure projects on one of the country’s busiest highways.

Minority Urges Government to Prioritise Road Infrastructure

The Minority Caucus described the latest accident as another painful reminder of the recurring road crashes on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, stressing that the continued loss of lives should not be accepted as normal.

The group has therefore called on the government to urgently complete all outstanding construction works on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, including the unfinished bypasses and other ongoing road projects, to improve traffic safety and reduce accidents.

Existing Highway Should Be Completed Before New Expressway

The Minority acknowledged the government’s commitment to the proposed US$1.7 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, with funds reportedly secured in an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana.

However, the caucus argued that approximately US$300 million would be enough to complete the current highway expansion works and bypass projects, which could provide immediate safety benefits for motorists and commuters.

According to the statement, while the proposed expressway represents an important long-term investment in Ghana’s transport infrastructure, completing the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway should be treated as the government’s immediate priority because it has the potential to save lives without delay.

Call for Immediate Action to Improve Road Safety

The Minority Caucus emphasized that the frequent fatal accidents on the Accra-Kumasi Highway demand urgent government intervention. It urged authorities to fast-track the completion of all outstanding road construction projects while plans for the new expressway continue.

The caucus believes that improving the existing highway infrastructure is critical to enhancing road safety, reducing traffic fatalities, and protecting the lives of thousands of motorists who use the major transportation corridor every day.
