The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Director-General has cancelled the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and instructed parents to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.

In an immediate response, GES Management described the publication as false and misleading, urging parents, guardians, students and the general public to disregard the information.

According to the Ghana Education Service, the Free SHS programme remains in effect, and the Director-General has not issued any directive requiring parents or guardians to make payments for chop boxes, trunks or any other items under the programme.

GES Says Director-General Cannot Cancel Free SHS

The Service further clarified that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service does not have the authority to cancel a government policy such as Free SHS.

GES therefore urged parents and guardians not to make any payments to individuals based on the circulating social media claims.

The Service advised the public to rely exclusively on official GES announcements and authorised communication channels for accurate information concerning Free SHS, school admissions, student requirements and other education-related matters.

Public Warned Against Fake GES Information

GES also cautioned members of the public and media organisations against creating or circulating unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear, confusion and anxiety among students, parents and the wider public.

The latest clarification comes amid growing concerns over fake news and misleading social media publications about Ghana’s education sector.

Parents and students are encouraged to verify any information concerning Free SHS fees, school supplies, admissions and payments through official Ghana Education Service channels before taking action.
