The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has called for stronger coordination within Ghana’s digital financial ecosystem to drive the next phase of financial innovation and improve access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

She made the call while delivering the Distinguished Digital Finance Lecture in Accra on Monday, August 17, 2026, under the theme “Building Financial Systems That Innovate at Scale.”

Mrs. Asante-Asiedu highlighted Ghana’s growing digital financial infrastructure, stressing that the country already has the technological foundation needed to expand financial innovation.

According to her, the major challenge is no longer developing new digital financial tools but improving coordination among stakeholders to maximise their impact.

She noted that Ghana’s digital payment ecosystem has recorded significant growth, with mobile money platforms processing approximately 954 million transactions worth GH¢493 billion in June 2026 alone.

The Second Deputy Governor said the scale of digital payments demonstrates the increasing adoption of financial technology and digital payment services across the country.

However, she emphasised that Ghana’s next stage of financial inclusion must go beyond giving people access to bank accounts and mobile money wallets.

She said a truly inclusive financial system should enable individuals and businesses to obtain affordable credit, insurance and investment services on fair and transparent terms whenever they need them.

Mrs. Asante-Asiedu further stressed the importance of creating a financial ecosystem that can support innovation while protecting consumers and maintaining financial stability.

The lecture reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to digital financial transformation, financial inclusion and the development of a secure and coordinated financial system capable of supporting Ghana’s economic growth.

Improved coordination among financial institutions, fintech companies, regulators and other stakeholders, she indicated, could help unlock greater opportunities for SME financing, digital banking and financial technology innovation in Ghana.
