The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat is set to release the 2026 Senior High School (SHS) placement results on August 31, 2026, paving the way for the commencement of the 2026/27 academic year.
The announcement follows the completion of the school selection process by more than 620,000 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
2026 SHS Placement Results Date
The Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, disclosed the placement date in an interview with The Ghanaian Times.
He explained that the SHS placement results would be released after the completion of the pre-placement exercise, which allowed BECE candidates to select their preferred senior high schools and technical institutions after receiving their examination results.
The pre-placement exercise, being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), was expected to conclude on August 9, although the deadline could be extended if necessary.
Mr Mohammed said initial checks indicated that a large number of candidates had successfully completed their school selection with support from their parents and guardians.
He added that no major challenges had been reported, increasing expectations that the exercise would conclude as planned.
How CSSPS Will Process SHS Placements
Following the completion of the school selection exercise, WAEC will submit the final candidate data to the CSSPS Secretariat.
The CSSPS will then process the information and determine the schools for which candidates qualify before officially publishing the 2026 SHS placement results.
The placement process is expected to determine where qualified BECE candidates will begin their Senior High School education in the 2026/27 academic year.
SHS Placement Resolution Centres Expanded
The Ministry of Education has expanded its SHS placement resolution centres to all 16 regions of Ghana in an effort to reduce difficulties commonly associated with the CSSPS placement exercise.
According to Mr Mohammed, the decentralised system will enable parents and candidates to address placement-related concerns within their respective regions rather than travelling to Accra.
The Ministry also plans to establish call centres to provide information, respond to complaints and assist candidates and parents with placement-related challenges.
New School Selection Process Expected to Reduce Complaints
Mr Mohammed expressed optimism that the number of SHS placement complaints would decline this year because candidates were allowed to make their school choices only after receiving their BECE results.
The new arrangement follows recommendations from a committee established by the Minister of Education after consultations with parents, students, guardians and other stakeholders following challenges recorded during the previous placement exercise.
The Ministry believes the revised process will encourage more realistic school choices and improve the efficiency and transparency of the Ghana SHS placement system.
Candidates Advised to Make Realistic School Choices
The Education Ministry has urged BECE candidates and their parents or guardians to carefully consider their examination performance when selecting schools.
Mr Mohammed advised candidates to accept the schools assigned to them through the CSSPS, explaining that placements are based on candidates’ academic performance and available spaces.
He cautioned that selecting schools where a candidate’s grades do not meet the required standards could result in unsuccessful placement and unnecessary appeals.
“The system can only place candidates into schools for which they qualify,” he explained, adding that when a candidate chooses schools beyond their academic performance, the system will automatically consider other available options.
Over 620,000 Candidates Sat for 2026 BECE
Although more than 620,000 candidates participated in the 2026 BECE, the exact number of students who will receive SHS placement will only be confirmed after WAEC submits the final pre-placement data.
The Ministry explained that some examination results have been withheld, while some candidates may not have obtained the required grades for placement into senior high or technical schools.
Category A SHS Expansion Plans
The Ministry of Education is also working on plans to expand Category A senior high schools to create additional capacity for students.
Mr Mohammed said the expansion initiative is currently undergoing the necessary administrative and procurement processes.
He expressed optimism that construction and expansion works could begin next year once all required statutory approvals have been obtained.
As the August 31 SHS placement results release date approaches, parents and guardians have been encouraged to support their children in making realistic school choices and to cooperate with the placement authorities to ensure a smooth, transparent and efficient 2026 CSSPS placement exercise.
