Three major teacher unions in Ghana have issued a final ultimatum to the government, warning of possible nationwide action if outstanding concerns over teacher promotion placements, salary arrears and allowances are not resolved.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) expressed frustration over what they described as continued delays in fulfilling commitments made to teachers.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the teacher unions said the 2025 teacher promotion placement and the payment of related outstanding arrears remain unresolved despite previous agreements with the government.
Teacher Promotion Placement Deadline
According to the unions, the government had agreed to automatically place all teachers affected by the 2025 promotion exercise by the end of September 2026.
They said the failure to meet that commitment amounts to a breach of the agreement reached between the government and the teacher unions.
The statement, signed by Thomas T. Musah, Jacob Anaba and King Ali Awudu, said the continued delay has increased frustration among teachers across the country.
The unions are also demanding action on several other outstanding issues affecting teachers, including the renewal of the collective agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance.
Teacher Unions Set September 24 Deadline
GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH have given the government until midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to address all outstanding concerns.
The unions warned that failure to resolve the issues by the deadline could lead to further action by teachers across Ghana.
They said their executive leadership may no longer be in a position to restrain members if the government fails to meet the demands.
The unions emphasised that the warning should not be interpreted simply as a threat but as a firm indication that teachers may take action if the unresolved issues persist.
Teachers Asked to Prepare for Possible Action
Despite the ultimatum, the leadership of the three teacher unions called on members to remain calm and wait for official directives before taking any action.
Teachers across the country have, however, been directed to prepare to participate fully in any action that may be announced by the unions.
The development puts renewed focus on teacher welfare, salary payments, promotion implementation and working conditions in Ghana’s education sector.
The unions’ demands are expected to remain a major issue for the government as the September 24 deadline approaches, particularly amid ongoing discussions over public-sector workers’ conditions of service.
