Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged to work constructively with newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga in Parliament, while making it clear that his long-term political objective is to transform the Minority Caucus into the Majority.
Speaking on the floor of Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after James Agalga officially assumed the Majority Leader position, Afenyo-Markin said he would not deliberately obstruct his counterpart.
Instead, he said the role of the Minority Leader is to provide alternative views, scrutinise government policies and offer perspectives that may not be considered by the Majority.
“I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin Promises Well-Researched Parliamentary Debates
The Minority Leader also assured the new Majority Leader that his contributions to parliamentary debates would be supported by extensive research.
He explained that the Minority Caucus has a responsibility to carefully examine government decisions, policies and legislative proposals before presenting alternative positions in Parliament.
“I can promise you a well-researched dossier for all my debates. That I can promise you,” Afenyo-Markin added.
His comments underline the role of the Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament as a key part of the country’s democratic system and parliamentary oversight.
Minority Leader Sets Political Goal
Despite his conciliatory message to James Agalga, Afenyo-Markin stressed that his support for the new Majority Leader would not affect the broader political objectives of the Minority Caucus.
He said his principal responsibility is to strengthen the Minority side of Parliament and work towards eventually securing a parliamentary majority.
“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he stressed.
Afenyo-Markin subsequently cautioned James Agalga against any attempt to weaken or infiltrate the Minority Caucus as he begins his tenure as Majority Leader.
James Agalga Takes Over as Majority Leader
James Agalga formally assumed the position of Majority Leader following an official communication from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
The communication announced changes to the leadership of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus.
The reshuffle became necessary after former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga was nominated to serve as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The leadership change has ushered in a new phase of parliamentary cooperation and political competition between the Majority and Minority Caucuses as both sides seek to advance their respective legislative and political priorities.
