President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The high-level African Union summit, scheduled for August 30, 2026, will focus on strengthening conflict prevention, peacebuilding and conflict resolution mechanisms across the African continent.
The meeting will be chaired by H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola and the African Union Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
AU Summit to Strengthen Conflict Prevention and Resolution
A major objective of the summit is for African leaders to consider and adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
The initiative is expected to provide a coordinated framework for addressing emerging and ongoing security threats while strengthening Africa’s capacity to prevent conflicts and promote sustainable peace.
The leaders will also assess existing African peace and security frameworks and discuss practical measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation and financing.
Particular attention will be given to strengthening the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
African Leaders Address Growing Security Challenges
The summit comes at a time when several parts of Africa continue to face serious security and governance challenges.
Among the key areas of concern are the ongoing conflict in Sudan, instability in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), insecurity across the Sahel Region, challenges in the Horn of Africa, and security concerns in Mozambique.
These challenges have increased calls for stronger continental cooperation, effective conflict prevention mechanisms and sustainable peacebuilding initiatives.
Mahama to Join African Leaders on Regional Stability
President Mahama and other African heads of state are expected to deliberate on actionable strategies to promote peace, security and regional stability during the extraordinary AU session.
The discussions are expected to reinforce Africa’s collective approach to conflict resolution, peacebuilding, governance and sustainable development.
The Luanda meeting could therefore play an important role in shaping the African Union’s response to emerging security threats and strengthening the continent’s ability to address conflicts through coordinated African-led solutions.
