The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally petitioned the Ministry of Transport to begin a review of public transport fares in Ghana.
In a joint statement issued on September 3, 2026, the two major transport organisations said their request is in line with the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares.
The GPRTU and GRTCC explained that the fare review is part of the established consultation process for determining commercial transport fares, taking into account the various operational costs faced by drivers and owners of commercial vehicles.
The transport groups indicated that consultations with the Ministry of Transport are expected to begin soon. They said the outcome of the discussions will be officially communicated to the public once the process is completed.
The leadership of the GPRTU and GRTCC has also appealed to commercial drivers, station masters, transport operators and the general public to remain calm and wait for the conclusion of the ongoing fare review process.
The organisations stressed that there has been no confirmed adjustment to public transport fares at this stage. Any decision to increase or reduce transport fares will only be announced after the necessary consultations with the Ministry of Transport.
The development has attracted public attention as commuters and transport operators closely monitor possible changes to trotro fares, taxi fares and public transportation costs in Ghana.
