The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has partnered with AFRICA’s BRAIN BANK® Global to support a major international summit that will culminate in the groundbreaking of a proposed Historic Medical City in Ada, Greater Accra.
The six-day programme, which combines healthcare investment, tourism development, medical innovation and economic growth, is scheduled to take place in Accra and Ada from September 3 to 8, 2026.
The 7th Annual Summit, Charity Ball and Medical City Groundbreaking will be held under the theme, “Africa’s Greatest Wealth, Its People; Restoring Africa’s Health Capital.”
Proposed Medical City to Boost Healthcare and Medical Tourism
At the heart of the initiative is the proposed Medical City in Ada, which is being designed as an integrated ecosystem combining healthcare, medical education, research, technology, innovation and economic development.
The project is expected to improve access to affordable and specialised healthcare services, while promoting technology-driven medical care and creating opportunities for healthcare professionals, investors and businesses.
GTA Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto said the partnership demonstrates how tourism can contribute to broader investment and national development.
She noted that the summit and Medical City groundbreaking would provide an opportunity to showcase Ghana to international participants while highlighting the potential of combining tourism, healthcare, investment and economic development.
Ghana Positions Itself as a Medical Tourism Destination
The collaboration is expected to attract government officials, investors, healthcare professionals, corporate executives, development partners, philanthropists and members of the African Diaspora.
Rev. Dr. Pam Fomunung, Visionary, Chief Executive Officer and Group Chair of AFRICA’s BRAIN BANK® Global, described the GTA’s participation as an important endorsement of Ghana’s growing ambitions in healthcare, tourism and investment.
According to her, the proposed Medical City is expected to go beyond conventional healthcare infrastructure, with the potential to support medical tourism, job creation, Diaspora engagement and sustainable economic growth.
The proposed areas of development include specialised healthcare, medical education, professional training, advanced diagnostic services, surgical technology, digital healthcare, telemedicine, medical research and international healthcare collaboration.
Medical City Project Could Create Jobs and Investment Opportunities
Organisers believe the proposed Medical City could create significant opportunities for local businesses, suppliers and service providers.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to workforce development, facilitate Diaspora knowledge transfer, attract investment and create opportunities across the hospitality and medical tourism sectors.
Businesses operating in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, construction, finance, technology, logistics, real estate and infrastructure are being encouraged to participate in the programme.
Full Programme for the September Summit
The six-day event will begin with a homecoming welcome reception in Accra on September 3, 2026.
On September 4, participants will take part in a Business-to-Business Market and community awards, followed by a symposium focused on Africa’s health capital on September 5. The day will also feature a red-carpet summit and awards gala.
Other activities scheduled for the programme include a Billionaire Breakfast Brunch and beach retreat on September 6.
The highly anticipated Medical City groundbreaking and Greater Accra tour will take place on September 7, while participants will travel to Cape Coast and Elmina Castles on September 8 as part of the cultural heritage experience.
African Diaspora Investment in Ghana
The initiative is also targeting members of the African Diaspora, who organisers believe can play an important role through expertise, investment, professional networks and philanthropic support.
The programme will provide opportunities for Diaspora participants to reconnect with Ghana’s cultural and historical heritage while exploring potential investment opportunities in Ghana.
Maame Efua Houadjeto described the initiative as more than an event, saying it could become a legacy project capable of attracting international attention, creating opportunities and strengthening communities.
The GTA partnership comes as Ghana continues to expand its tourism strategy beyond traditional leisure and cultural tourism.
The country is increasingly promoting tourism through international conferences, investment opportunities, business events and other forms of purpose-driven travel.
If successfully developed, the proposed Ada Medical City could become an important test of how healthcare investment, medical tourism, tourism development and African Diaspora capital can combine to support long-term economic development in Ghana.
