The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspects, including two teachers, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and torture of 30-year-old Bismark Amoh in the Assin Fosu area.

The suspects are accused of abducting the victim, holding him captive and demanding additional ransom money from his family.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led police operation conducted by the Central North Regional Police Command to rescue the victim and apprehend those allegedly responsible.

Four Suspects Arrested in Kidnapping Case

The police operation, code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators,” was coordinated by Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohonu.

Personnel from the Central North Regional Police Command, Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters and the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) in the Ashanti Region participated in the operation.

The four suspects have been identified as:

  • Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School and resident of Breman UGC.
  • Charles Doku, 53, a security guard and resident of Breman UGC.
  • Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician and resident of Breman UGC.
  • Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias “Culture,” also a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School.

The police said the suspects are currently in custody and are being processed for court.

How the Assin Fosu Kidnapping Allegedly Happened

According to preliminary police investigations, the incident began after Mavis Badu Acheampong allegedly accused the victim of defrauding her of an unspecified amount of money on September 3, 2026.

Investigators say Mavis allegedly worked with her husband, a senior military officer who is currently outside Ghana, to lure Amoh from Assin Fosu to Kumasi through telephone communication.

Upon the victim’s arrival, police allege that Mavis, Charles Doku, Oteng Baffour and other accomplices who remain at large forcibly abducted him.

The victim was allegedly held at Mavis’s private residence between September 6 and September 11, 2026.

Kidnappers Allegedly Demand Additional Ransom

Police investigations indicate that the victim’s family paid GH¢19,500 as ransom during the ordeal.

However, the alleged kidnappers reportedly demanded an additional GH¢30,500, threatening the victim’s life if the extra money was not paid.

According to the police, the suspects used their own mobile phones to communicate with the victim’s family in an attempt to avoid detection and police tracking.

The family eventually reported the matter to the Regional CID in Assin Fosu on September 8, after making the ransom payment while the victim remained in captivity.

Police Rescue Kidnapping Victim

On September 11, investigators reportedly intensified their efforts after receiving information that the victim was being moved to another location.

Police tactical teams intercepted the suspects during the attempted transfer and successfully rescued Amoh.

The victim was found in a severely injured condition and was immediately transported to a medical facility for emergency treatment.

He remains admitted under medical care and police protection while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the alleged kidnapping.

Police Hunt for Remaining Suspects

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that investigations into the Assin Fosu kidnapping case are ongoing.

While four suspects have been arrested, police are continuing efforts to apprehend the senior military officer allegedly linked to the incident and other accomplices who remain at large.

The suspects currently in custody are expected to face court proceedings as investigations continue.

Police Warn Against Taking the Law Into Your Own Hands

The Police Administration has warned members of the public against resorting to kidnapping, violence or other criminal acts to settle disputes or recover money.

The police stressed that financial disputes, grievances or allegations of fraud must be handled through lawful channels rather than through violence or unlawful detention.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to combating kidnapping, organised crime and criminal syndicates and protecting communities across the country.

The Police Administration said criminals may attempt to evade law enforcement, but security agencies would continue using intelligence-led operations to identify, arrest and prosecute those involved in serious crimes.
