A Ghanaian academic based in the United States, Dr Kofi Akamani, has died after being shot in Illinois, where he worked as a lecturer and professor at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale.
The 48-year-old academic was reportedly shot near Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale at about 5 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies who responded to the incident found Dr Akamani with gunshot injuries. He was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was later pronounced dead.
Dr Kofi Akamani’s Academic Career
Dr Akamani was a professor in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he taught courses related to forest recreation and conservation social science.
His death has led to an investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities said his 35-year-old wife, Betty Akamani, had been arrested in connection with the incident and was facing multiple charges. Officials stressed that the investigation was still in its early stages and that the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation.
The Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office and Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.

Kofi Akamani’s Education in Ghana and the United States
Dr Akamani began his academic journey in Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Development Planning, specialising in Urban Planning.
He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Development and the Environment, earning an MPhil in 2006.
He subsequently obtained a PhD in Natural Resources from the University of Idaho, further developing his expertise in environmental management, forestry and natural resource research.
Ghanaian Academic’s Research on Forest Communities
During his doctoral studies, Dr Akamani returned to Ghana for six months to conduct research into collaborative forest management.
His research examined how collaborative approaches to forest management affected the social and ecological resilience of two forest-dependent communities in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
His academic career in the United States focused on forestry, conservation and the relationship between communities and natural resources.
The death of Dr Kofi Akamani has brought attention to his academic contributions and his work connecting forestry research, conservation and community development in Ghana and the United States.
