Former Speaker of Parliament Prof Mike Oquaye has commended the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament, despite the caucus having fewer members than the governing majority.

Prof Oquaye said the Minority has continued to play an important role in holding the government accountable, describing its smaller numerical strength as unfortunate.

Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of the NPP Delegates Conference in Kumasi, the former Speaker said he was impressed with the work of the current NPP Minority Caucus.

He noted that although the group is relatively small in Parliament, its performance has been significant.

Mike Oquaye Calls for Strong NPP Leadership

Prof Mike Oquaye also highlighted the importance of the NPP electing national executives who can work effectively with the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general election.

According to the former Speaker, NPP delegates should assess candidates based on their experience, track record, vision and ability to cooperate with others, rather than popularity alone.

He said the performance of candidates would be observed over time, adding that their ability to work as a team would be an important consideration for the party.

Prof Oquaye stressed that effective cooperation between the NPP’s national leadership and its presidential candidate would be essential to the party’s organisational efforts ahead of the next general election.

NPP Unity Key Ahead of 2028 Election

The former Speaker warned that a lack of coordination among the party’s leadership could contribute to internal divisions and weaken the NPP’s preparations for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He said bringing together leaders with the right experience and leadership qualities, while maintaining unity within the party, would strengthen the NPP’s organisational structure.

Prof Oquaye said the party’s future electoral prospects would depend not only on its presidential candidate but also on the effectiveness of the NPP party machinery supporting the candidate.

Mike Oquaye Expresses Confidence in Bawumia

When asked about the NPP’s prospects in the 2028 presidential election and whether he believed Dr Mahamudu Bawumia could defeat the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof Oquaye expressed confidence in the NPP flagbearer.

He described Dr Bawumia as a strong candidate and pointed to his record as a factor behind his confidence.

However, Prof Oquaye stressed that the presidential candidate would require a well-organised and effective party structure to support his campaign.

His comments come as the NPP holds its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, where delegates are electing national executives who will help oversee the party’s organisation ahead of the 2028 general election.
