The Assin South District Police Command has arrested a father and his son in connection with the suspected murder of a 31-year-old man at Assin Akrofuom in the Central Region.

The deceased, identified as Samuel Kofi Amankwa, popularly known as Kofi Marshie, reportedly died under circumstances that are currently being investigated by the Ghana Police Service.

The two suspects, identified as Joseph Mensah and his son, Anthony Mensah, have been provisionally charged with murder and are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Cocoa Bean Theft Allegation Linked to Assin Akrofuom Murder Case

Preliminary police investigations suggest that the incident followed a confrontation between one of the suspects and the deceased over an alleged theft involving half a bag of fresh cocoa beans.

The confrontation reportedly occurred after the suspect allegedly caught the deceased stealing the cocoa beans.

Investigators have also linked the incident to previous allegations that the deceased had stolen coconut seedlings belonging to the suspects.

Confirming the arrests, the Central North Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Edmund Agyemang Badu, disclosed that the father and son voluntarily reported themselves to the police following the incident.

He explained that a police team dispatched to the scene discovered the deceased lying on his back near an electricity pole.

The officers also retrieved a nylon rope suspected to have been used to tie the deceased to the electricity pole.

A preliminary examination of the body reportedly revealed bruises on the victim’s hands, eyebrows and waist, with the injuries appearing consistent with an alleged physical assault.

Family Raises Concerns Over Circumstances Surrounding Death

Meanwhile, some relatives of the deceased have presented a different account of what allegedly happened before his death.

The family members, led by Nana Kofi Ohemeng, the Asona Abusuapanin of Assin Akrofuom, alleged that the two suspects forcibly entered the deceased’s room while he was asleep.

According to Nana Ohemeng, the suspects allegedly dragged the 31-year-old man out of his room and subjected him to a physical assault.

He further claimed that the deceased’s room was approximately 500 metres away from the location where the alleged attack took place.

The conflicting accounts have added another dimension to the case as police continue investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The Ghana Police Service is expected to pursue further investigations as the suspects remain in custody over the alleged murder.

Authorities have yet to conclude their investigations, and the allegations against the suspects remain subject to the judicial process.
