Commencing nationwide on March 20, 2024, three pre-tertiary teacher unions called off their two-week strike, citing the government’s inability to resolve their terms of service.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) obtained an interim injunction to stop the industrial action, opening the door for talks, which is why the strike was decided to end.

In a media statement released in Accra on Tuesday, these unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT)—jointly declared the conclusion of the strike.

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers’ President in Ghana, King Ali Awudu, stressed the significance of their employers’ swift participation in negotiations to resolve their complaints.

“As law-abiding citizens and in adherence to the court’s directives, we hereby terminate the strike that commenced on March 20, 2024. We urge all our members and pre-tertiary education teachers in the country to return to work immediately,” Mr. Awudu said.

“We urge the employer, led by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, to commence negotiations this afternoon, on April 2, 2024. This will expedite the negotiation process and prevent similar incidents in the future,” Awudu added.

He also encouraged the Ministry of Labor Relations and Employment to start talks right away.
