The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says that he was chosen as the first Muslim flagbearer by Christians, who make up the bulk of the party’s membership.
Speaking to a few Muslims on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the Suhum Ayekotse Central Mosque during the IFTAR event, Dr. Bawumia discussed his experience joining the NPP and stressed the importance of his victory in keeping the party’s flagbearer position despite early misgivings about a Muslim leading the party. He also engaged with Imams, Chiefs, and Suhum Constituency residents.
Because of the huge support he received from Christian party members, he claimed that divine intervention was the reason behind his achievement.
“During the presidential primary, they said a Muslim cannot lead the NPP. But by the grace of God after voting out of the 10 candidates I secured an unprecedented 61% which signifies the hand of God in the victory because when you look at NPP, Christians are more than Muslims in the party so it means it is the Christians who elected Dr Bawumia a Muslim as flagbearer for the NPP for the first time it has not happened before “Dr. Bawumia said.
In a daring speech to the Muslim community, Dr. Bawumia pledged that, should she be elected president of Ghana, she would bring the Qur’an to Jubilee House, the country’s official residence.
“After December 7th I will take the Qur’an and pray and take it to the Jubilee house. It is Possible, he reiterated
Vice President Dr. Bawumia expressed his hopes for the next presidential election, emphasizing that he would like to be president twice, comparing his eight-year term to Mahama’s four-year remaining term.
Dr. Mamudu Bawumia called for calm negotiations and emphasized how he was in competition with former President Mahama, asking him to give up and give him the chance to lead the country.
“So we are going into election everything must be peaceful. I am contesting this election with my Brother the former President Mahama [Flagbearer of NDC] who has been President before reason I have been telling him to stay back so that I also clinch the presidency because I have not been President before. we know what he did he should also give me a chance to be President to also exhibit what I can do”. he added.
In an attempt to win over voters, independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen has stated that Ghana, with its predominantly Christian population, ought to choose a Christian president in the next elections, which are scheduled for 2024. This contrasts with Dr. Bawumia’s statement.
During his speech at the Easter Sunday Convention of the Church of Pentecost at the Dr. Thomas Wyatt Assembly, Kyerematen positioned himself as the candidate who could change the country and pleaded vehemently for the congregation’s support.
He presented himself as the epitome of Christian values and underlined the significance of choosing a leader who shares these beliefs.
